Music at Leys

Intent

The intent of music provision at Leys Primary School is to inspire a love of music and develop pupils’ musical knowledge, skills and confidence. Music is planned to be inclusive and accessible to all pupils, enabling every child to participate regardless of background or prior experience. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils are introduced to a wide range of musical styles, traditions and composers, helping them to develop an understanding of music as a universal language and a vital part of cultural expression. Our curriculum aims to support pupils’ personal development by promoting creativity, collaboration and self-expression.

Implementation

Music is implemented through regular, high-quality lessons that follow a progressive and well-structured scheme of work (Music Express). Lessons incorporate singing, listening, composing and performing, allowing pupils to develop their skills in a practical and engaging way. Teachers use a variety of resources, including instruments, recorded music and digital tools, to support learning and cater for different learning styles. Opportunities are provided for pupils to perform both within the classroom and in wider school events, reinforcing confidence and enjoyment – these include Rocksteady Lessons, attending Rocksteady concerts and taking part in school choirs. Where appropriate, specialist teaching enhances the provision provided.

Impact

The impact of music provision is seen in pupils’ growing confidence, enjoyment and musical understanding as they progress through the school. Pupils are able to talk about music using appropriate vocabulary and demonstrate skills such as keeping a steady pulse, recognising musical elements and performing with increasing accuracy. Music contributes positively to pupils’ wellbeing and supports wider learning, including communication, teamwork and emotional expression. By the time pupils leave the school, they have developed a solid foundation of musical skills and an appreciation of music that prepares them for further learning and lifelong enjoyment.
