2. What we've been learning

 Summer 1

This term we are concentrating on minibeasts – we will use a range of fiction and non-fiction resources to explore our understanding of a number of minibeasts.  This will culminate in a minibeast day, planned to embed the children’s learning and interests in this fascinating topic.  We will use this as inspiration for our continuing quest to improve our writing, reading, speaking and listening skills.

Within Maths some of our learning is about extending our understanding of numbers to 20, adding and taking away and extending our shape understanding by manipulating, composing and decomposing which will be reinforced by creating a minibeast shape inspired piece of artwork.

Spring 2

This term brings superheroes to life in Reception. We will dive into fun stories like Supersloth, Supertato and Superworm to spark their imagination and talk about what makes a hero. After that we will also talk about real life superheroes like doctors, nurses, police officers etc.

Learning Highlights:

Maths: Following the White Rose curriculum: we will explore length, all about the numbers 9 and 10 (and their introduction to the number bonds to 10) and we will also introduce 3D shapes.

Phonics: Using Jolly Phonics, we will continue to practice blending/segmenting and tricky words with different activities, games, songs and actions.

Other areas: we will create Superhero props, role-play rescues and learn about real-life heroes like firefighters.
