2. What we`ve been learning

Summer 1:

English

Our text this term is 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' and we are using this as a base for a number of different writing genres.  We will write a diary, a persuasive formal letter and a narrative linked to the book focusing on expanded noun phrases, formal and informal tone, fronted adverbials, speech and writing for effect.

Maths

In our learning this term we are extending our fraction learning to decimals.  We will be focusing on tenths and hundredths through the use of manipulatives and pictorial representation (counters, place value chart and number line ).  We will also be comparing and ordering decimals before moving on to the use of money.

Foundation

In our contextualised curriculum, we are going to learn about  the history of  railways (and the impact it has had over time).  We will also be looking at futurism in art and exploring mechanical systems (levers and linkages) in design and technology through creating a moving picture of our artwork.

Spring 2:

English:

Our text this term was 'The Firebird' a picture book based on "A Celebration of Stravinsky's Classic Ballet'. The focus of our learning is to write a narrative.

Maths

The focus of our learning this term is to embed and extend our knowledge on fractions. This will included whole numbers, mixed numbers, improper fractions and applying to addition and subtraction.

Design and Technology:

The focus of our learning was Shell Structures.  We disassembled packaging before learning about how to create a strong and sturdy protective packaging using nets and computer aided design.   We learnt about Robert Gair who invented folding cartons.  We also explored design and created our own biscuit packaging before evaluating our learning.

Science:  Sound

Our focus this term was to learn about sound vibrations and how they travel through different mediums.  We explored high and low pitch and sound waves.  We also discovered how to measure sound.

Spring 1:

English

The focus this term is reading 'The Iron Man' and exploring its language and meaning through discussion so that we have the understanding to be able to create our own news reports after learning the relevant skills.

Maths

Our focus this term is to apply informal written methods that involve multiplication and division.  Our second focus is length and perimeter (in particular about Metres and Kilometres and reasoning with their equivalents)

Art

This term our focus is learning the skill of tone and texture in sketching our ideas for a sculpture based on flight before creating our own version.

Geography

This term the focus is learning about longest rivers, highest mountains and largest deserts in the world and comparing to the UK.  Alongside exploring map reading (compasses, grid references and map symbols).
