3. Classroom Highlights
John Blanke Summarising
As part of our continued work for Black History Month and reading Black and British we have read about John Blanke. He is the first black man where we know his name and his face. We have been working on summarising skills so had to summarise the text in 4 - 5 sentences and work out the order of events. There were lots of discussions around what were the most important points and what bits we could afford to leave out and not lose meaning.
Ivory Bangle Lady
As part of Black History Month, we have been reading Black and British by David Olusoga. We are working through chronologically different events in history that he writes about. We have been studying Ivory Bangle Lady whose body was discovered in York but believed to have been living in Britain during the Roman period. Here are some of our thoughts around her status in society, wealth and burial.
Gummy Bear Results
Look at how our gummy bears have absorbed our water, sugar, salt and milk. We can see that the largest gummy bear has absorbed the most therefore if we are feeling dehydrated, something full of minerals and vitamins will rehydrate us the most as it causes our blood cells to expand the most. Blood cells struggle when we drink or eat something salty as the salt prevents the blood from absorbing as much water as it needs.
Blood Transportation
We have been investigating what happens when our blood needs to transport parts around our body including minerals, vitamins, sugars, water and hormones. We started with a celery experiment so we could see xylem vessels absorbing water to represent our blood vessels.
We then, placed gummy bears in different liquids to see what happens when we put these liquids into our bodies - sugar, water, salt and milk. We ensured all gummy bears were same starting size so it was a fair test. Check back to see our results in a few days!
Blood Vessel Exploration
We took part in an investigation to find out which blood vessel was the widest. We used cups with different sized holes to represent the size of the vessel. Whichever cup emptiest quickest, must the largest, whichever cup emptied slowest must be the smallest.
