BALL SKILLS (Lesson 2)

 

LESSON OBJECTIVE-

  • To recognise how a small game activity can be improved.

 

EQUIPMENT-

  • BALL (medium size ball)
  • BALL (small size ball)
  • BEAN BAG

WARM UP-

  • Collect a ball or beanbag. Practise all the different way of throwing and clapping.

 

  • Ball scramble: Put 10-20 ball/socks you can find into a hoop/circle. Each player has a hoop/circle 10-15 steps away from the balls. Players have 1 minute to run and collect one ball/sock from the hoop and take it back to their hoop and go again until all the ball/socks have been collated.

 

 

SKILL DEVELOPMENT-

  • If you have someone to work with collect a small or medium sized ball.

 

  • “A” rolls the ball to “B” who picks it up and throws it back.

(Six turns and change over). Pick the ball up and throw back as quickly as possible.

 

  • Same practice but can you throw overarm?

 

  • “A” rolls the ball slightly to one side of “B” so she/he has to move to pick it up and throw back (Six times and change).

 

  • Throw continuously to one side of each other so your partner has to move to catch the ball.

 

 

GAME ACTIVITY-

  • Sequence passing: make a group 3-4 (Each player has a number)
  • Number 1 passes to number 2
  • Number 2 passes to number 3
  • Number 3 passes to number 4
  • Number 4 passes to number 1 etc.

 

  • If you can not make a small group practise throwing and catching. Can you make up your own game? What are the rules?

 

  • Play the game standing still to establish who is throwing to whom.

 

  • Same game but everybody keeps jogging.

 

  • Same game but everyone keeps moving until they receive the ball, then they must remain stationary.

 

  • Same game but kick pass. (The size of area might have to be made slightly larger).

 

  • Put away the equipment.

 

CONCLUDING ACTIVITY-

  • Collect a small ball each and practise continuous bouncing.

WARM UP-

  • Take out a bean-bag or ball show how you can use it with control.
  • Throw it into the air and catch it. (two hands and one handed)
  • How many times can you clap your hands before catching it? What is your record?
  • Clap your hands between your knees before catching the ball / beanbag?
  • Clap behind your back / under your leg?
  • Turn around completely once before catching?
  • Can you touch toes before catching?

 

SKILL DEVELOPMENT-

  • If you have someone to work with take out a medium size ball and pass the ball to each other. (chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass)

If you do not have someone to work with you can use a wall.

 

  • Throw to one side of partner who moves to catch the ball.

If you do not have someone to work with you can use a wall.

 

GAME ACTIVITY-

  • Take out any equipment suitable for throwing and catching
  • Make up a game which involves throwing and catching.
  • Can you play the game one handed?
  • Can you play the game when you are moving?
  • Can you add a target?
  • How do you score?

Look at some ideas and try them out. Which ones are good ideas and why?

  • Put away the equipment.

 

CONCLUDING ACTIVITY-

  • Take out a beanbag and practise using it to throw and catch.
