Maths at Leys

Intent

At Leys, we aim for all pupils to become confident, fluent and enthusiastic mathematicians. Through the use of White Rose Maths curriculum, we prioritise depth of understanding, ensuring children build secure conceptual knowledge and make meaningful connections across mathematical ideas. We want pupils to develop a positive attitude towards maths, view mistakes as part of learning, and leave primary school equipped with the mathematical skills needed for everyday life and future learning.

Implementation

Maths is taught daily using the White Rose Maths curriculum, which is carefully sequenced into small, coherent steps to support long-term learning. Lessons follow a mastery approach, beginning with concrete resources, moving through pictorial representations, and progressing to abstract concepts. Teachers use high-quality mathematical talk, precise questioning and stem sentences through oracy to develop reasoning and deepen understanding.

Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are embedded in every lesson, with opportunities for pupils to explain their thinking, justify answers and apply their knowledge in varied contexts. First class teaching is adaptive, responding to pupils’ needs through targeted support, scaffolding and appropriate challenge. Assessment for learning is used throughout lessons to identify misconceptions and inform next steps, ensuring all pupils are supported to keep up.

Impact

As a result, pupils demonstrate strong conceptual understanding and are able to confidently articulate their mathematical thinking using accurate vocabulary. They show resilience when tackling challenging problems and can apply their learning to unfamiliar situations. Progress is evident for all groups of learners, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged, enabling pupils to leave primary school mathematically prepared for the next stage of their education.
