Fri 11 Oct 2019Outstanding Achievements of Leys Primary School Recognised by the Mayor of London
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has celebrated the outstanding performance of Leys Primary School in Barking & Dagenham with an awards ceremony.
The school was honoured for its work to reduce educational inequality and achieve exceptional results for children who were previously behind in their studies, at a Schools for Success awards ceremony.
Leys Primary School has been recognised for outstanding pupil progress and ensuring the:
· embedding of a culture of resilience & aspiration
· commitment to improving the emotional health and wellbeing of the whole school community
· securing of high expectations & outcomes in behaviour, safeguarding & attendance
· prioritising of basic knowledge acquisition and systematic reading practices
· establishing of collective core values for effective teaching & learning
The Schools for Success programme was created by the Mayor in 2017 to improve the support given to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme recognises primary and secondary schools that ensure strong progress for their lowest attaining pupils, has a strong overall performance and shares their work with other schools.
The ceremony was hosted on Friday (27th) by Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare Joanne McCartney.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’d like to congratulate the staff of Leys Primary School for their excellent work. Schools for Success was created to celebrate the difference that teachers, teaching assistants, support staff and governors are making every day to support children and reduce inequalities, and this school’s inclusive and supportive learning environment is a great example of this. London has the best schools and teachers in the country, and by working together we can make sure that no young Londoner is left behind.”
Richard Gough, Deputy Headteacher, said: “It was an honour for our school to be recognised at this prestigious event. The award is testament to all of our staff’s hard work, our pupils’ resilience and our community’s growing aspirational mindset. We are all very proud.

Leys Primary School has been recognised for its outstanding work in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing across the whole school community. It is the first primary school in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham to achieve the prestigious Wellbeing Award for Schools, having embedded a culture that values highly, the happiness and emotional welfare of pupils, staff and parents and carers.
Mrs Gough, Personal Development and Literacy Manager, and co-lead of the award in school said, “We are extremely proud to have our collective endeavours and commitment in this area recognised. Achieving the award requires a substantial commitment by all stakeholders as there are eight objectives and over fifty KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for the school to evidence in order to achieve the accreditation. Our commitment to emotional health and wellbeing of all members of the Leys Primary School community continues.”
Mrs Rogers, Assistant Headteacher and co-lead of the award added, “As a school, we are indebted to the Virtual School who provided the funding for this venture. As a result of the opportunity to participate, and everyone’s hard work, our pupils have become more confident and articulate in speaking about their emotional health and readily and positively embrace occasions to be mindful and supportive of themselves and each other.”
Mr Gough, Deputy Headteacher, commented, “Achieving the award has been a united effort: staff, governors, parents and pupils have been motivated to be involved in a variety of ways – by sharing their opinions in questionnaires, supporting coffee mornings, fundraising days and special lunches to name a few. At the forefront are the school Wellbeing Champions: members of our pupil, parent/carer, staff and governing body community (some of whom met with the award verifier), who are great ambassadors for our school. The mutual efforts involved in achieving this award are a testament to the strength of belief in our school and its ethos: ‘Resilience to Achieve; Aspiration to Succeed.’ We shall display the award plaque with great pride and maintain the legacy of all that has been achieved so far.”

Fantastic News! Leys Primary School has achieved, through resilience and aspiration, the Wellbeing Award for Schools. We are very proud of this success and thank ALL members of our pupil, parent, staff and governing body community for their support and commitment in helping to bring about this meaningful accreditation. World Book Day

Pupils and staff are invited to join in the fun of World Book Day by embracing this year's theme of 'Share A Story'. Children are permitted to bring a book from home to share with their friends in class. Those who wish to do so are also encouraged to wear fancy dress costumes relating to a book genre or story character - whatever they choose. A donation of £1 which will go towards school funds for the purchase of story books for children from Nursery to Year 6 would be greatly appreciated.
