Phonics

At Leys Primary School we follow the Letters and Sounds phonics programme which is delivered in the Jolly Phonics style.

At Nursery stage, children begin Phase 1 and progress to Phase 2.

Reception children consolidate their phonic knowledge thus far before progressing through Phases 2 – 4.

As children leave the Early Years Foundation Stage and move into Year 1 of KS1, the earlier phonics phases are revised and consolidated as required, and Phase 5 is taught. In the second half of the summer term, Year 1 pupils (and Year 2 resit pupils) take the Phonics Screening test which is a statutory assessment.

Phase 6 continues the pupil phonic awareness in Year 2 with a particular focus on spelling and extending skill set more competently into children’s independent writing.

Further information about phonics can be sought from your child’s class teacher or Miss Fagan, the EYFS Lead Practitioner or Mrs Gough, Literacy Standards & Progression Manager.
